Why Do Thai Girls Have A Certain Reputation?

Why Do Thai Girls Have A Certain Reputation?
Unfortunately most male visitors only encounter Thai women in bars so they, get a rather a distorted view of what they are about. I am trying not to fall into the usual trap of saying Thai girls are ‘easy’. Most Thai girls actually would prefer to date a Thai man – there is actually quite a lot of prejudice against foreigners. But In holiday places like Phuket with a lot of resident Ex Pats there is much less prejudice of a Thai girl seen with foreign men. I was walking down the street with one girl on each arm in Patong Beach and nobody batted an eyelid!

So the women come in all shapes and sizes and colours. Thailand is a large country nearly the size of France and there is quite large ethnic regional variations. In general Asian women do tend to be more petite and feminine than their western cousins. Thai girls are renowned for having tiny cute hands and feet. If she is tall with big hands, she may be a man or Katoey (Transsexual)! Believe me it can be difficult to tell sometimes! They do tend to hang around in packs.  Some bar areas tend to attract them.

If you are teenage Thai girl the bright lights of Bangkok or working in the the seaside resorts can seem much better option than staying at home farming. When you hear from friends or blokes that have just been to Bangkok and places like Pattaya, it can sound a bit seedy! What I found was that the people were just getting on with their lives the best they can, just like anywhere!

One thing is fore sure, most Thai women are smart and streetwise, because they have to live on there wits every day. YOU DON’T and you can afford to make choices that they can’t.

Western men seem to lose their brains on holiday. A bit of attention from a cute girl sends them a bit mad!So here is my take on Bar Girls. Again this is my experience and there are good and bad types but be on your guard. It is all very easy going just like the country.

Thai Bar Girls
You are a single guy and a pretty girl starts chatting to you, yes she may even like & even fancy you – but probably she likes your wallet even more! With dozens of men arriving at her bar everyday she can pick and choose. You can go to some bars and be ignored others they don’t leave you alone. If you have ever seen the Film ET – ‘Phone Home’, The Thailand version is ‘Send Money Home’. There are no social benefits or pensions for ordinary people in Thailand,  so children help to support their parents by sending money home when they can. Often girls get pregnant at an early age and the parents and grand parents look after the children while she goes away to work.

You are considered a ‘farang’ (Thai slang for white foreigner) ATM cash machine and they will probably not sleep with you for free. So be sure of her and your intentions before proceeding back to your hotel.

If you don’t pay up, they may regard you as a ‘boyfriend’ and the GFE (Girl friend experience) can get VERY expensive! If after a couple of days, if she takes you to the gold jewellery shop you are in trouble! If you do go out with them shopping you will get ‘local’ cheaper prices for most things – leaving more money for you to spend on them! (I got an hour on a Jet Ski with local girl instead of usual 20 minutes)

There should be an academy award for some of these girls because they are superb actresses! “My mothers cow is sick it might die, she can’t afford the vets bills” Etc Etc. You don’t want to end up being one of her ten blokes sending money every month! (Western Union Love) Many a romance has developed from the GFE and sometimes it develops into the WE (wife experience). This may be followed by the DE (divorce experience) and the going home with no money experience.

Remember the song “Will you still love me tomorrow.” As long as you realise it’s a VERY different culture from home, don’t try and fight against it, go with it, enjoy it and you will have a great time. Take usual precautions, if you get my drift!

All girls have to carry an id card with their age on. You really don’t want get ‘involved’ with someone under 18 as it is illegal. Thai prisons are not nice! I will leave it at that.

Most hotels will have safes or deposit boxes where you can leave your passport and valuables. Either lock everything away when expecting a visitor. I have had experience of girls taking cash out of your wallet when asleep! If you really like a girl, leave some money about to test her. Believe me, It is best to find out early on rather than to get really BURNED later on.

Remember just like in the West bars and clubs are probably NOT where you will find a wife or partner. Bar girls can be great for a holiday romance but you will be lucky to find a good wife. Also if you want sex choose one in her twenties. If you want a wife or long term girl friend that will long after you get one in her thirties and forties. The young ones will spend EVERYTHING in your wallet and they are masters at relieving you of your cash BAHT. IMPORTANT! Just because a Thai women works in bar does NOT mean that she will sleep with men for money. I met some great girls that just flirt with the customers, to earn more money from drink sales. In most places the girls work 6 days a week so there day off is important to them.

Thai women have a gift to make you feel special! Enjoy your time in Thailand and be nice to the girls. Nice guys are appreciated. Being a Gentleman and some manners is appreciated by the Thais.

Using Mobile Telephones

If you make a lot of phone calls get a Thai network SIM phone card. Put it in your phone if it is not locked to a network. A phone shop will set it up for you – well worth any extra payment as mine and a friends phone card would not work properly for 24 hours when I set it up myself. You can get top up cards from convenience stores like 7/11. Best coverage one2Call other networks DTAC & True (Orange), you can get mobile internet on your laptop. Internet Cafes sell SIM cards & are everywhere. Mobile Phones are expensive in Thailand but calls are cheap.

What Do I Need In Thailand?

Realise It’s hot and rarely gets cool. I should have remembered, it’s near the equator stupid! Bangkok has the highest AVERAGE temperatures of any city in the world. So pack clothes with short sleeves & shorts. I normally wouldn’t be seen dead in a peaked cap but a cap really helps keep the sun off. Clothes from market are cheap, so travel light. Obviously use sun tan lotion – if you want a tan use factor 15 if you just want protection use 25.

In some locations it is wise to cover your legs and arms in the evenings when the mosquitoes come out. I personally recommend using these products ‘Lifesystems Expedition Plus’ Insect Repellent and ‘Autan Aftersun Aloe Vera Insect Repellent’ Lotion. Use ‘Tiger Balm’ if you get bitten. Don’t leave cuts and wounds untreated as they go septic very quickly in the tropics. Tiger balm seems to be used for every medical condition over there!

Thai Medical Treatment is very good in modern facilities. If you are staying for a while, drugs such as for blood pressure can be expensive as the big brands are controlled by a small number of International wholesalers.

For good or bad there are well known international stores all over the country such as Carrefour, Tesco (Lotus) & Boots so you don’t need to bring the kitchen sink with you! I bought some Carex antiseptic hand wash, which was confiscated at Manchester Airport check In because it was over 150 mls size.

UK Airport Security Rules

Money Matters
Thailand is a cash economy, so don’t expect to pay by Credit Card for your hotel unless it is a well-known international chain. You can use the Internet to book hotels and internal flights to get round this. There are loads of Internet Cafes & Wireless Hot Spots for your laptop. Even travel agents only except cash if you are booking tours or flights. You can only get “cash back” at the big hypermarkets like Tesco & Carrefour but don’t rely on it, always ask before committing to a purchase. You get a poor exchange rate in UK so exchange your most of your cash when you get there! Malaysia/Thailand are the credit card fraud capitals of the world so:

Think like the old days:  Take multiple money streams like cash Sterling/Dollars, cards & travellers checks. Have a plan B & C!

Tell your bank if you plan to use your plastic abroad. It probably will still stop working after a couple of days but least you tried!

Find an ATM machine soon after you land at the airport; they nearly all take VISA or MasterCard (Cirrus & Maestro). Check your card works OK. Also There are money changers at the airport – they are regulated to give the correct rate.

Don’t try and make more than one withdrawal a day. Or if you enter your PIN incorrectly, DON’T try again until the next day. It’s an automatic BAD flag!

If your Credit Card stops working, you can usually still withdraw money if you go to a bank with your card and passport. This was a lifesaver for me as ALL my cards stopped working, so I could not draw money from ATM’s.

Always ask how much things cost before you buy and BARGAIN. There are two rates one for locals and one for foreigners (known as ‘Farangs’). All Farangs are regarded as millionaires and walking ATM cash machines. Always be polite and just walk away if it seems too much! Especially Tuk Tuks & Taxis!

Make sure you change big notes 1000 baht break into 500 200 and 100 notes. “I don’t have change sir” is the usual scam. Bear in mind one thousand baht is a large amount of money to an ordinary Thai person, so it is rude to ‘flash your cash’! If you go round the markets you WILL get mythered to buy stuff; again if not interested just politely decline.

Missing Thailand

For the last two years I have visited Thailand in February.  As I look out of the window at the frost (Somerset England), I wish I was there. Like many people sadly, I don’t have the resources to visit this year. The exchange rate has fallen on the  baht 20% since I last visited. Having said that the airfares seem to be about 10% cheaper so you can probably get a great package deal if you look around. Even busy Phuket is struggling to fill all the hotel rooms with occupancy only levels at 60% in the peak season.

In this blog I will share my views and tips on my time in the Land of Smiles. It is certainly a place that makes me smile. I watch the video of Phuket Gazette News with the lovely presenter Able Wanamakok at least once a week.

I will be adding my photos, tips, recommended products in the weeks ahead to help me get through this darn UK winter! Least I can then imagine I’m there.
